A long-time community activist, MJ has worked with several nonprofit organizations in development and communications, including ARC of North Carolina and Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.  She has experience gained as both staff and board member.  Her past nonprofit board service includes the Visual Arts Exchange and Adopt-A-Family. MJ Co-Chaired the Yates Mill Associates' Fundraising Gala, was Sponsorship Chair for Fayetteville Museum of Art's Russian Fundraiser & Art Auction, and doubled fundraising as Sponsorship Chair of last year's Jefferson-Jackson Breakfast.

Her interest in the arts is immense, and for eight years she served as the inspiring leader of Carolina Designer Craftsmen, a fine arts guild, and also represented major North Carolina artists, such as Ben Long, the noted painter. She is a former newspaper photographer and aspiring videographer.  MJ's never met a stranger, which is quite apparent in her low-key strolling video of the State Farmer's Market at: http://youtu.be/QlFzZDmGd5c

Previously, MJ engaged in the art of politics for a living, gaining progressive experience which led to major leadership roles in more than 47 campagins and organizations across the country, including serving as National Finance Director of the Democratic Governors' Association, Finance Director for Gov. Jim Blanchard of Michigan, and managing two statewide election committees for the North Carolina Democratic Party. Her early experience working for Gov. Jim Hunt as a special assistant in his campaign led to her role as  manager of several campaigns at his request for worthy candidates.  She is a former newsletter editor and board member of Lillian's List of NC, Democratic Women of Wake County, and Wake County Women's Commission.
